Scope & Content A newspaper article titled "Civil rights milestone" from the Marin Independent journal, December 30, 1994 about the struggle by African American workers in the Marinship ship yards during World War II to be able to join the union, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Shipbuilders and Helpers in America. The union had a whites-only policy, while the Marinship ship yards was a closed shop. This articles described the sequence of events that led to the courts requiring the union to admit African Americans on an equal basis with whites.
